Ubiik Inc., a leading IoT solution provider for next-generation Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), is pleased to announce that it has been awarded Taiwan’s electricity AMI tender for the second year in a row. This US$15 million contract covers the installation, operation and maintenance of the communication system and PaaS for managing more than 210,000 smart electricity meters in New Taipei City, Nantou, Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taitung areas. Starting from Spring 2020, Ubiik will deploy its AMI solution - comprising the Communication (FAN) Modules, Data Concentration Units (DCU) and Head-End System (HES) - and will leverage Weightless™ LPWAN technology to collect and manage the power data over the following 6 years.
According to the plan of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MoEA), a total of 3 million low-voltage smart electricity meters will be installed across Taiwan by 2024. It is expected that the value of the AMI projects under this plan will reach US$1.3 billion in 2025. Taiwan Power Corporation (Taipower), the sole electricity provider in Taiwan, indicates that so far over 400,000 smart electricity meters have been installed with half of them connected within the AMI system, and the company aims to reach 1 million meters installed and connected by the end of 2020.
As the only startup among the qualified vendors, Ubiik is pioneering the adoption of Low Power Wide Area Network technologies (LPWAN) in Taiwan AMI project. By mid-2019, Ubiik has already connected over 63,000 smart electricity meters across Taiwan. Around 6 million messages are sent and received daily through Ubiik’s Weightless communication network and infrastructure. A rigorous verification and testing process in the field has demonstrated the coverage and reliability of Ubiik Weightless AMI solution with up to 17 km range in suburban environment and typically 2 km in denser urban environment, while achieving deep indoor penetration of electricity meters in basements with metal enclosures.
With countries across the globe adopting more renewable energy and the impact on the management of the smart grid being a growing concern, the overall market for AMI solutions and smart grid/energy management solutions is poised to grow. Building on its successful deployments in Taiwan, Ubiik is now looking at expanding its AMI business globally while entering the energy management market through turnkey solutions combining IoT connectivity, AI or machine learning technologies, and SaaS offerings.
